The era of the flagship sedan might be over, but Mercedes is working on an updated S-Class. It can’t come soon enough as the model recently celebrated its fourth anniversary.
While still heavily camouflaged, the prototypes have been spotted during testing, suggesting notable modifications. They maintain their recognizable appearance, yet feature several updates, including a completely redesigned grille. Though mostly hidden, it's clear that the grille is larger and taller compared to the existing model.
The grille is accompanied by newly designed headlights featuring three-pointed star motifs. These serve dual purposes as daytime running lights and turn signals. Additionally, a redesigned front bumper with modified air intakes can be seen. The prototypes also seem to sport camouflaged side mirrors, indicating that they will undergo updates too.

The rest of the design largely carries over, but we can see a lightly revised rear end with new taillights that feature star graphics. They’re joined by an evolutionary bumper. The S-Class may also incorporate some changes to the reflectors and exhaust.
Although spy photographers weren't able to capture any images from inside, earlier reports indicate that significant updates are on the horizon for the cabin. While there hasn't been any official confirmation, it's rumored that the model will introduce a completely redesigned dashboard equipped with a Hyperscreen display. Additionally, the vehicle is expected to feature a front passenger screen, which has become quite popular lately.
Little else is known about the model at this point, but the current S-Class offers an assortment of engines including an turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six developing 442 hp (330 kW / 448 PS) and 413 lb-ft (559 Nm) of torque.
Customers have the option to choose a powerful 496 hp (370 kW / 503 PS) twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine, a robust 621 hp (463 kW / 630 PS) twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 engine, or a plug-in hybrid system that offers an electric-only range of 46 miles (74 km).
